BOOK BUDDIES: A non-testing reading incentive program

Don't shy away from book talking Banned Books. In this session, we will give you tips on explaining Intellectual Freedom to your students in the context of banned books. We will give you the essentials of the book talk as well as introduce new titles your kids will love that haven't been banned yet...but they will be! What if you are challenged after your book talk? Boys and Reading? Yes!

This session will cover the research in the gender gap between boys and girls and how to inspire and motivate boys to read through the use of comic books and graphic novels. The presentation will include a PowerPoint on the instructional benefits of comic books along with practical ideas to start a "Comic Club". Of particular emphasis will be using this genre to increase student performance in boys. They target audience is upper elementary/middle school.

Bringing the Literacy, Reference and Research Standards to Life

Karaoke has created a sensation at our school! Students who use Karaoke have a marked improvement in reading fluency. Research has found that using music fosters language retention. There is a variety of teacher-friendly equipment available in all price ranges. Karaoke is also fun and motivating for students.

Gore, Gas and Giggles provides titles and suggested uses for appealing books which interest boys. Both fiction and non-fiction books will be highlighted that include humor, action and adventure and other engaging topics. Featured titles contain themes such as violence, injustice, sexuality, anti-family, profanity, drugs and more. Emphasis will be placed on titles for boys ages 8 and up. Guys Read! A culturally responsive approach entails more than dressing a certain way or interacting with students in a caring manner. By design, a culturally responsive approach to literacy teaching gives explicit attention to academic excellence as well as cultural competence. Teachers who use a culturally responsive approach with their male students understand their own culture in relationship to that of their students. Hardwiring ExC3ELlence

Principals and media specialists completed the evaluation together & integrated the tool into the professional planning process. Information and Media Literacy: Get with IT!

Learn how easy teaching “IT” can be with instructional technology. “IT” stands for Informational Text, one of the strands of the new Information and Media Literacy Sunshine State Standards. Find out what informational text can be and brainstorm ways to incorporate it into the K-12 curriculum. Learn how to bring these objectives to life by using available technologies and hands-on learning experiences. Discover how other educators are teaching informational text and how you too can make it come alive in your classroom or media center. Bring excitement back into the media center with the Class Act Student Response System. This program provides an easy way to deliver an interactive lesson while tracking students' progress. Students use remote controls to answer questions from a PowerPoint presentation or paper. You can even turn your lessons into a game and award prizes!

MY SATURDAY: Motivating Through Reading, Writing and Art
Session Strand: Reading Motivation, 50 minutes
Our session presents a collaborative project involving a fifth grade class, its teacher, the art teacher and media specialist. The class project was to write a book. But to write and illustrate a book, the class first studied other books. Ultimately, the class entered a book contest.
